Hagar and Sarah; Bond or Free? — March 2, 2008
Synopsis ►
Are we children of the bondwoman or inheritors through the freewoman? Paul unlocks the mystery of the story of Hagar and Sarah in this letter to the Galatians, for the two women are symbolic. Trying to keep the Law, we are Children of the Law—the bondwoman, the Natural way, like Ishmael who was born of the schemings and complicity of Sarah, Abraham, and Hagar. But our Promise is through the freewoman, through the Promised One, descendant of Sarah’s miracle child, Isaac. As Martin Luther himself found, there is no way to have a peaceful conscience by keeping laws, following rules. But by hearing the Promise and believing, we give up our slave heritage. The Holy Spirit sparks the fire that destroys our bonds.
